Reference

Arithmetic mean
Sum ÷ n. The everyday average; sensitive to outliers.
Geometric mean
n-th root of the product. Use for rates and ratios.
Harmonic mean
n ÷ Σ(1/x). Best for averaging speeds or rates per unit.
Median
Middle value after sorting; robust to outliers.
Variance & std dev
Average squared deviation from the mean. Sample (n−1) vs population (n).
Skewness
Asymmetry of the distribution. Positive = long right tail.
Excess kurtosis
Tail weight vs normal. Positive = heavier tails / more extremes.
IQR outliers
Anything below Q1 − 1.5·IQR or above Q3 + 1.5·IQR.
Z-score outliers
Anything more than 3 sample standard deviations from the mean.
Welch's t-test
Two-sample mean test that does not assume equal variances.
