Reference
- Arithmetic mean
- Sum ÷ n. The everyday average; sensitive to outliers.
- Geometric mean
- n-th root of the product. Use for rates and ratios.
- Harmonic mean
- n ÷ Σ(1/x). Best for averaging speeds or rates per unit.
- Median
- Middle value after sorting; robust to outliers.
- Variance & std dev
- Average squared deviation from the mean. Sample (n−1) vs population (n).
- Skewness
- Asymmetry of the distribution. Positive = long right tail.
- Excess kurtosis
- Tail weight vs normal. Positive = heavier tails / more extremes.
- IQR outliers
- Anything below Q1 − 1.5·IQR or above Q3 + 1.5·IQR.
- Z-score outliers
- Anything more than 3 sample standard deviations from the mean.
- Welch's t-test
- Two-sample mean test that does not assume equal variances.
